ODUNDE Art Sho’ Brings Culture, Community, and Creativity to the Heart of Philadelphia

by Dwayne E. Butler

Arriving just around noon on Saturday April 11th, the energy surrounding LOVE Park—officially John F. Kennedy Plaza—was already in motion as the ODUNDE Art Sho’ transformed the area into a vibrant cultural hub.

Venturing directly across JFK Boulevard toward Penn Center and Suburban Station, the skyline immediately commanded attention. Standing tall across from the park was the iconic Philadelphia City Hall, a historic landmark at 1400 John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Its 548-foot tower, crowned by the statue of William Penn, remains one of the most recognizable sights in Center City—serving as a powerful backdrop to a day rooted in culture and expression.

As we made our way through the park, my wife and I encountered a small but passionate group of protestors holding signs that read, “Immigrants Make America Great!” Organizations such as Latinas Poderosas and the National Domestic Workers Alliance stood in solidarity, adding a layer of social awareness and activism to the day’s atmosphere.

Crossing the street into the heart of the Art Sho’, the experience shifted into a vibrant, multicultural marketplace, where a variety of cultural influences came together through art, fashion, and handcrafted goods.” Vendors lined the pathway, many of them offering handcrafted goods—from handbags to traditional jewelry. Among them were Skyseeds, who are known for their striking handmade gemstone pieces that immediately draw attention.

Health and wellness were also well represented. Roots Herbal Healing offered natural remedies, including healing creams and supplements rooted in holistic traditions. Nearby, an artist showcased detailed works capturing Philly and New York urban life—featuring buildings, buses, and even New York’s Apollo Theater—printed on canvas, cotton duck, and linen.

Fragrance and lifestyle brands added another sensory layer to the event. State of Being and Fairy Greens enticed visitors with scented candles, room sprays, and body products. Let's Be Real LLC presented a variety of fragrances and body creams, while Peaches & Park stood out with a display that illustrated how scent can create a sensual and intimate home atmosphere.

In a modern twist, Thrive Flowers was also onsite, showcasing products ranging from lighters to THCa kief and THC-infused drinks—reflecting the evolving landscape of lifestyle vendors at cultural events. For those with a sweet tooth, the offerings were impossible to ignore. Delightful Obsessions delivered standout treats including sweet potato cheesecake, cinnamon buns, lemon pound cake, and an assortment of cookies that quickly became crowd favorites. Adding a nostalgic touch, The Candy Lady, led by Kimara Nakia, brought classic candies like Charms Blow Pops, Mike and Ike, and Lemonheads—each purchase supporting survivors of domestic violence.

Lifestyle and home goods continued with Lila N' Berry, presenting bath and spa essentials, while fashion lovers found interest in Coco & Coast Clothing Boutique, offering a curated selection of clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Spirits and specialty beverages added another dimension to the experience. New Liberty Distillery introduced visitors to its own brand of whiskey collection and also, they introduced the Kinsey whiskey brand. The Kinsey French Toast flavor seemed to be the popular pick at that moment. Philadelphia Mead Company offered honey wines in unique flavors like Blueberry Hibiscus and Cardamom Rose, while Kareemia Wilson of Ismenie Wines showcased selections from Cyrenity Sips, Auroras Vines, and Ismenie Wines brands—each with its own story. Alongside their 16 staple wines, they offer an array of seasonal varieties.

Throughout the marketplace, additional vendors displayed Eagles-themed gear, gemstones, and African wood carvings, reinforcing the event’s blend of local pride and global heritage.

A Cultural Prelude with Purpose

While smaller and more intimate than the full ODUNDE Festival held later in the year, the Art Sho’ delivered a powerful mix of visual art, commerce, culture, and community engagement. From live artistic expression to meaningful conversations and entrepreneurial showcases, the event served as both a creative marketplace and a cultural gathering space.
