Jamaica Rises in Brooklyn: NYC Welcomes Its First Jamaica Rising Day Parade



There are moments when a community celebration becomes something much larger than a parade. On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Brooklyn witnessed one of those moments as thousands of Jamaicans, Jamaican-Americans, Caribbean nationals and supporters gathered for the inaugural Jamaica Rising Day Parade, bringing the colors, sounds, history and unmistakable spirit of Jamaica into the streets of New York City.


The historic celebration established a new cultural tradition in one of the world's most influential cities—and did so in the heart of Brooklyn, home to one of the largest and most vibrant Jamaican communities outside the island itself. The streets became a sea of black, green and gold as the Jamaican diaspora celebrated not simply where they came from, but the extraordinary contributions they have made to New York and the United States.

Mamdani’s Pied-à-Terre Tax: A Plan to Tax the Wealthy Is Put on Hold



New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani came into office promising to find new ways to make wealthy New Yorkers contribute more toward the cost of running the city. One of his most significant proposals was a new pied-à-terre tax, targeting certain expensive residences that are not their owners' primary homes.


A pied-à-terre is essentially a second residence—such as a luxury Manhattan apartment owned by someone whose primary home is somewhere else.


Mamdani's argument was straightforward: New York City needs additional revenue, and those with substantial wealth should shoulder more of the burden.
